A New Year, A New Battle

In the four years of its existence, the Triangle Corporate Battle of the Bands has rocked Durham and raised more than $300,000 for local charities. This has not come without sacrifice. Heartstrings and guitar strings alike have been torn. Many a brow has been laced with sweat and, for an unfortunate few, blood has been shed at the bite of swiftly snapping instrument cases.

Still, this is no time to rest on our laurels. A new cause brings us to arms in 2011: North Carolina Arts in Action. They are a worthy organization that transforms the lives of children through participation in the arts. They engage children in dance activities in order to challenge their minds, strengthen their bodies and nurture their self-esteem. This year’s Battle will prove more dramatic than ever before. Yet our charity is deserving of the utmost loyalty and sacrifice. The time to stand is now! Join us in support of the cause, or take up your musical weapons and battle! DECLARE YOUR INTENT.

These brave men and women who went before us blazed the path and taught us to fight with integrity, courage and purpose. It is for these pioneers of the battlefield that we forge on, and for all the victories waged before us that we hold steadfast in the belief that we, too, can emerge from the foggy field with our flag held high. And perhaps sell some merchandise. But mostly the flag thing.

Ask Emily

You Have Questions. She has Exceedingly Polite Answers.

Dear Emily,
Will I be embarrased on stage?

— Worried in Wake Forest

Dear Worried — You have nothing to fear. For many, going off to battle brings them to their finest hour. In this instance you have only 15 minutes, which may prove to be the perfect length of time for displaying your talents without exposing any ineptitude.

Dear Emily,
Why should my company join the ranks?

— Confounded in Carrboro

Dear Confounded — I might remind you that no battle was ever won in solitude. If your company should band together, its accomplishments could astound you. Aside from that, the cause we rally behind is greater than any victory. The question isn’t, “Why should we fight?” The question to ask is, “How can we not?”

Dear Emily,
How serious is this Battle?

— Apprehensive in Apex

Dear Apprehensive — This Battle is one of dramatic circumstance and epic consequence! Perhaps that’s a bit overstated; this is really about rallying behind the cause. The competition may be well-prepared, but nothing can rob you of the exhilaration of banding together with your fellow co-workers. If that doesn’t ease your mind, it might be worth noting that there will be awards given in a number of categories.

Dear Emily,
Who are the judges?

— Uninformed in Umstead

Dear Uninformed — There will be an astute panel of local celebrities judging every regiment. Those scores will be combined with votes from the audience of onlookers to determine the best of the Battle. There will also be awards in a variety of other categories. You, however, will want to win the Battle. That is where the whole “glory” part comes in.

Dear Emily,
Are you single?

— Curious in Cary

Dear Curious — Better to ask me after the Battle.
